Ballon d’Or winner Cristiano Ronaldo has been given special football boots by popular sportswear company Nike. The Portuguese star beat rival Lionel Messi to the award after his impressive run for Real Madrid and Portugal in the past year.
One hundred and seventy three journalists worldwide voted Ronaldo in a poll. Nike decided to honour the player by making limited-edition footwear for the superstar. Only 777 pairs of the football boots are available, which are scheduled to hit the market early next year. The boot has metallic gold soles with the players log CR7 clearly highlighted.
Ronaldo moves past three-time winners Michel Platini, Johan Cruff and Michel Platini. He received his first whilst at Old Trafford in 2008 before his world record move to Spanish giant Real Madrid the following year.
“It is a great honour to receive my fourth Golden Ball. The emotion is like the first one, it is the dream come true again. I never thought in my mind to win the Golden Ball four times, so I am pleased and so happy,” Ronaldo said.
Messi helped his club – Barcelona – to yet another La Liga title and a domestic cup last year. The Argentine could not help his country win the Copa America twice – losing to Chile in 2015 and 2016 in penalty shoot-outs. He placed second.
French striker Antoine Griezmann placed third despite helping his country reach the Euro 2016 finals. He won the Golden Boot at the tournament after helping his club Atletico Madrid reach the final of the Champions League for the second time in three years.
Barcelona forwards Luis Suarez and Neymar placed fourth and fifth respectively. Suarez ended last season as La Liga’s highest goal scorer and Neymar contributed immensely aside helping Brazil to the elusive Olympic Gold medal this year.
